Subject: vmware and failover question related to ILMT.
Feedback Type: Question
Product Area: Domino Server
Technical Area: Administration
Platform: Windows
Release: 8.5.3
Reproducible: Not applicable
I know this question belongs in a VMware/vSphere forum but in our environment that site is so slow as to be impossible to use so I'm tossing this out here.
In our VM environment, we currently have 3 VMs in the VM cluster. Our Domino server runs on one and only one of the VMs. If the VM supporting Domino goes down, it automagically spins up on one of the other two servers and life is good.
The 3 server cluster is being upgraded with a 4th monster machine and therein lies the rub. If the VM supporting Domino goes down and Domino fails onto the bigger machine, it actually causes us problems (*).
When configuring a VM environment (specifically vSphere V4.1.0 and VMware vCenter Server 4.1.0), can we mandate that Domino not come up on the big VM? If that's not possible, can we just tell Domino to stay down and manually restart it on one of the smaller VMs?
Thanks for any info you have on this.
Doug
(*) It's all tied into sub-capacity licening. We don't want to install ILMT and as long as our PVU computation is below 1000 (and it is on the smaller VMs), we're allowed to do quarterly manual compliance audits which suits us just fine. The new machine is waaaay over the 1000 PVU count and, as I understand sub-capacity, you're required to compute PVUs for the manual audit option based on the biggest VM in the farm. I'm thinking if it's possible to force Domino to stay of the big machine, we can successfully argue that manual audits are still allowed and we don't need ILMT.
I'm opening discussions with our IT group and our IBM VAR just to make sure we do this right but any feedback is appreciated.
